Having overcomer a recent brush with cancer, and now planing a new series of concerts, she has just received the ultimate in style endorsements, an exhibition dedicated to her at London's shrine to fashion and design, the Victoria and Albert museum. The exhibition tracks the pint sized singer's rise to fame through fashion. Among the earliest items unearthed in this "Kylie-ology" are the overalls she wore in the Australian TV soap series "Neighbours," the show that gave her first big break. Alongside the overalls, sits the white muslin cotton dress Kylie wore in the video for her early smash hit "I Should Be So Lucky," -- the single recorded with Stock, Aitken and Waterman that rocketed her to pop stardom.

The gloves are off on ‘Roadshow’ FINE ART & ANTIQUES DR. Taped in August 2006 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the shows display a variety of regional objects, such as autographed baseballs, Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings and a colonial spice cabinet. In the Philadelphia episodes, the PBS appraisers comment on the work of Philadelphia sculptor and master of the mobile Alexander Calder. Maurizio Fiorilli, the Italian government lawyer leading negotiations with American museums, confirmed Friday that he has been trying to open discussions with the Cleveland museum as part of an international campaign to halt the trade in illegally excavated antiquities. He said three e-mails to the museum have gone unanswered, although he acknowledged that the e-mails may not have been addressed properly and may be missing. In the latest message, sent Dec. 20, Fiorilli said he proposed that the museum send representatives to Rome in February for a discussion about how the Cleveland museum could return ancient works in exchange for long-term loans from Italian museums.

Pucker Up: The Fine Art of Whistling

Maybe Show of the Week should have been the Beeb's reworking of Macbeth, which tips Shakespeare on his head and rattles brilliant change from his pockets. But along came Pucker Up, as delightful a prelude to an evening's viewing as you will find. Each year the International Whistlers Convention, which is high in prestige but hardly a big-ticket event, is held in Louisburg, North Carolina. One of the pleasures of this lovingly produced film by Kate Davis and David Heilbroner is it takes time to meet the champions before they arrive at the convention. There's Joe Sodano, from Morristown, New Jersey, who drives a poultry delivery truck and whistles while he works; eyebrows arching expressively - a characteristic of serious whistlers. Joe started whistling to birds in the trees and was fascinated to hear them whistle back.

UT Dallas presents art exhibition entitled "Object"

The exhibition, Object, curated by John Pomara and Charissa Terranova, will run in the main gallery of the Visual Arts Building at The University of Texas at Dallas from Jan. 12 to Feb. 16. The exhibition is free and open to the public. In this mixed media exhibition, artists create hybrid forms of art that investigate the object's plurality of form in current art practices. Featured artists include Frances Bagley, Candice Briceno, Nancy Brown, Richie Budd, Jeff Hand, Lily Hanson, Teresa O'Conner, Tim Stokes, Jason Villegas and Kathy Webster. Terranova remarks that, though seemingly mundane, “objects have a magical, if not chimerical power." “Objects" in the exhibition include video, textile-paintings, three-dimensional photographs, sculpture and pictures “spilling onto the floor in stuffed-animal splendor." Terranova explains, “The work of Object disregards the partitions between painting, sculpture, and architecture, claiming media contamination its own.

'Souls' opens spring season on campuspring 2007 gallery lineup to ...

A mixed-media work titled "Beneath My Souls" by Vicksburg artist Lesley Silver opens the spring 2007 gallery lineup at Jackson County campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Titled "Beneath My Souls," the show will be up through Feb. 16 and hold its opening reception at 6 p.m. Thursday with a gallery talk by the artist at 6:30. Silver has owned the Attic Gallery in Vicksburg for 35 years. She attended her first workshop in 1984 at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. Her artistic expression, primarily in photography, became more experimental, she said, with each decade until the 2003 death of her mother, Ocean Springs artist Klara Koock. Silver said that when she began to use her mother's paint brushes, it seemed to kindle an exploration of painting in her work.

Bookends great example of art deco

We were going to put this pair of bookends in a neighborhood garage sale, but one of our neighbors thought they were more valuable than the price we were going to charge. She suggested we ask what you thought of them. Thank you. - L.C., Sarasota I needed a little more information. By finding out that the bookends are 7 inches high and are incised with the name of the company, L.V. Aronson, and the date 1924, I was able to research the company. I could not tell from the picture if these art deco bookends were bronze or bronze-clad. Bronze, which is an alloy of copper, tin and zinc, would make the bookends rarer and more valuable. I determined these are bronze-plated. Instead of using bronze, companies often made bronze-plated bookends. Plaster of paris or a metal base was poured into a mold and later a layer of bronze was applied.

Lincoln museum extends deadline to guess day of millionth visitor

SPRINGFIELD - Officials at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum have extended the deadline for guessing when the one-millionth person will visit the museum honoring the 16th president. The millionth visitor was expected by the end of 2006. But the early December snowstorm slowed attendance, prompting officials to extend the contest entry deadline to Jan. 5, museum spokeswoman Jill Burwitz said.As of Christmas Eve, attendance at the museum, which opened in April 2005, was 987,470. Burwitz said the museum hopes to receive the millionth visitor by the end of January. The winner will receive two one-year passes to the museum and a $100 gift certificate to the museum gift store. During its first year, more than 600,000 people toured the museum.Information from: The State Journal-Register, http://www.sj-r.comA service of the Associated Press(AP) .

The finest fine art of the season

After Knopf devoted a luxurious book last year to 84-year-old Lucian Freud's prodigious output of paintings since 1996, little remained to do but show us what no other art book has: Freud at Work, photographs by Bruce Bernard and David Dawson (253 pages; $65). Freud reputedly calibrates his distance from people as ruthlessly as did his grandfather, the founder of psychoanalysis, doubtless for different reasons. In portraits and nudes, the painter ruminates obsessively on the degrees of intimacy or recoil that scrutiny can promise or preclude. As a portraitist, he aptly describes himself to interviewer Sebastian Smee in the book as "a biologist." "Freud at Work" offers intriguing -- though frequently uninviting -- glimpses of the painter and his models at work in his dingy studio, of unfinished canvases on the easel and of the painter himself colluding in creating a photographic record to rival those that help keep aflame the renown of Picasso (1881-1973), Francis Bacon (1909-1992) and Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966).

Ferguson happy to have Beckham back for exhibition game

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) - Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is ready to welcome David Beckham back to Old Trafford when his former protege plays for the visitors in an exhibition match. Beckham has been picked for a UEFA Select XI to play United in March to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome -- which established the European Economic Community, forerunner to the EU -- and United's 50 years of European football. It will be the first time Beckham has played against his former club since leaving United to sign for Real Madrid in July 2003. Beckham's exit followed a deterioration in his relationship with Ferguson and came five months after the former England captain was cut on the head by a boot kicked in anger by Ferguson following a home defeat by Arsenal.

Art Gallery to host Macomb College Student Exhibit

The Macomb Community College Student Show will take place through Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007 at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts. The exhibit will include select works from approximately 100 students chosen from Macomb College Art Classes including: Drawing, Painting, Life Drawing, Ceramics, Color & Design, and Jewelry & Metalwork. They saw a shipping container filling with 26 tons of sand. They stood eye-to-eye with a Picasso bust of his onetime mistress, Dora Maar. They stared, open-mouthed, as a crushed cigarette pack skittered around a dealer's booth at the Miami Beach Convention Center like a puppet on a string. They spent millions. Most important, caught for four days in a bubble of unbridled consumerism and adept social engineering, they watched each other do all of it. Art Basel Miami Beach, which ended Dec. 10, is not just the country's largest and most important marketplace for art. Fine Art Printing for Photographers is that book. Its subtitle, Exhibition Quality Prints with Inkjet Printers, is quite apt as it does a superb job of getting to the core of what is needed to understand and create high quality prints. What I find is that many books on printing focus on "The Printer". That is they focus on a specific brand of printer whether it be Canon, Epson or HP. This is a book that transcends a brand and focuses on what it takes to generate a high quality print. Many books will tell you about dots per inch and printer resolution. Fine Art Printing for Photographers concentrates on items that will allow you to make an informed decision on what will work best for your specific needs and equipment.

Azerbaijani-Turkish Friendship Society Organizes an Exhibition ...

The exhibition is organized in the centre of “Academy" of District “Beylukduzu". Edinburgh Castle, until now the most popular attraction in Scotland, pulls in around 1.2m people a year. Held annually since 2004, it is currently presenting this year’s seven finalists, with the winner announced today. He or she will walk away with $25,000 (and presumably one big smile). Among the work on show is Philip Brophy’s Body Malleable, in which he presents a projected image, sound and a sculptural ball into which the viewer is invited to insert their finger; the finger then becomes the controlling device. Also featured is Tony Schwensen, pictured, whose work is literally his own body. Here he situates himself in a gallery for a 24-hour period on a chair equipped with digital scales. Ostensibly, it tells the story of Teri Horton, a 73-year-old former long-haul truck driver with an "eighthgrade education" who happened to buy a large abstract painting at a thrift shop for $5. Never mind why she bought it (originally as a gift, even though she thought it ugly), what matters is that a local art teacher checked it out and thought the picture might be an original Jackson Pollock. Ms. Horton's response: "Who the #$&% is Jackson Pollock?" A more accurate title for the film might have been "Who the $#%& Does the Art World Think It Is?"Unfortunately for its creators director Harry Moses and producer Steven Hewitt (the executive producer is Don Hewitt, creator of "60 Minutes") all its arrows fly wide of their mark.

Rancho Mirage Art Affaire features fine art, music today and ...

The 2006 Rancho Mirage Art Affaire, an outdoor event that brings high-quality art and music to Whitewater Park in Rancho Mirage, runs today and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free. It has to have a heart and soul." As we might once have needed to visit Ashland, Carmel or San Francisco in order to partake in the visual or performing arts, we now have enough opportunities within our own Napa County to meet our cultural needs.Locally we are blessed with art studios, galleries and performing groups such as the Napa Valley Symphony that not only bring opportunities of rich pleasure to local residents, but also provide a key element of cultural enrichment to visiting tourists.

Jewelry store sponsors art contest

Robert Miller Fine Jewelry in Howell has a beautiful new look, thanks to some art students in Livingston County. We're talking about an amazing piece of art. Through a special grant from the Grand Rapids Foundation, seventh- and eighth-grade students designed, developed and created a sculpture and mural installation featuring the four seasons of Michigan. Each side of the free-standing sculpture features fun things to do and see in Michigan. The school art project began with research. "The students wrote letters to the Michigan Tourism Association to request brochures about the state," Burton Middle School art teacher Joanne Perko said. "We used the pictures in the brochures to help us brainstorm what we might want to include on the sculpture." Once the students determined what they wanted to highlight, they handpainted dozens of 6-inch tiles and fired them.

The politics of art

Artists Nick Hollibaugh, left, and Ben Watkins are vacating their Valley Street studio in December to make way for the American Locomotive Works, a luxury townhouse and condominum development.
